Cooperstown Students Continue to Outperform State Benchmarks
COOPERSTOWN—The Cooperstown Central School District recently shared New York State assessment results with the Board of Education for grades 3–8 representing Cooperstown’s strongest performance in the past five years. Overall, students continue to perform well above state averages, reflecting steady growth and ongoing improvement across grade levels.
Based on the most recent New York State assessment data, 77% of Cooperstown students demonstrated proficiency in literacy, compared to a state average of 53%. In the area of numeracy, 67% of Cooperstown students met or exceeded proficiency, surpassing the state average of 57%. These outcomes place Cooperstown well above state benchmarks and highlight the positive impact of our instructional practices.
ELA results continue to show steady growth over time, reinforcing a district-wide focus on reading and writing instruction across all grade levels. Math performance, while showing more variability by grade—as is common statewide—remains strong overall and continues to inform our instructional planning, professional development, and targeted student supports.
Moreover, science assessments in grades 5 and 8 indicate that most students are meeting or exceeding state expectations, reflecting our emphasis on hands-on, inquiry-based instruction aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards.
"These results are a powerful reflection of the hard work happening in our classrooms every day,” said District Superintendent Sarah Spross. “Seeing Cooperstown students perform well above state averages speaks to the strength of our instructional practices and the commitment of our educators. We are incredibly proud of our students and deeply grateful for our teachers and staff, whose dedication makes results like these possible."
State assessments are just one of many tools we use to understand student learning. Teachers and staff regularly review multiple sources of data to guide instruction, ensuring continued growth for all students.
“We are proud of our students’ efforts and grateful for the dedication of our teachers and staff, as well as the continued partnership with our families,” said Amy Malcuria, Elementary School Principal.
