Cooperstown Senior Thomas Hellenthal Places 6th in Final State Swim Meet, Wins Sportsmanship Award

COOPERSTOWN – Senior Thomas Hellenthal competed at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) & Federation Swimming and Division Championships in Ithaca this past weekend.

Thomas swam the 100 backstroke in 51.32 on Friday and 51.22 on Saturday, his best time in the 100 back this season. He placed sixth in the 100 back among swimmers in New York state public high schools and seventh overall in the Federation, which includes private schools, the Catholic league and New York City schools.

Additionally, Thomas swam the 50 freestyle in 21.42 on Friday and 21.38 on Saturday, setting a personal record in the 50 free. That earned him 10th place in the NYSPSHAA and 12th place overall.

This marked Thomas' second trip to states for swimming in his high school career. He won the Sportsmanship Award for Section III swimmers, which was awarded based on votes from Section III coaches.
