Cooperstown 7th & 8th Graders Visit Baseball Hall of Fame to Learn About Women's History in Baseball

Posted Date: 03/25/26 (10:45 AM)

For Women's History Month, students in the 7th and 8th grade physical education classes with Mrs. Wolfe visited the Cooperstown Central School library with Mrs. Hitchcock to explore female executives in baseball. Using the "Dirt on Their Skirts" curriculum from the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, the students learned about four female baseball executives: Effa Manley, Helene Britton, Judy Scarafile and Linda Alvarado. Students learned about their contributions and impact to baseball history.

The culminating field trip to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum on Tuesday allowed students to explore the Hall of Fame and visit the displays where these women are recognized. The students learned Effa Manley is the only woman who has been inducted into the Hall of Fame, and they saw her plaque among the male legends.

Highlights of the trip included touring the museum, trying on old uniforms and learning from the vast knowledge of the Hall of Fame educators. Students saw how the equipment and the uniforms evolved over the years. Additional highlights included the Japanese display, the movie in the Grandstand Theatre, exploring the Diamond Dreams exhibit and walking in the plaque gallery.

Thank you to Mrs. Wolfe for coordinating this field trip for our 7th and 8th graders, and thank you to the excellent museum educators at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum for providing this valuable educational experience!
