Cooperstown Top 4

Cooperstown Junior/Senior High School formally recognizes the top four scholars of the Class of 2024. Graduation will take place on the Fenimore Art Museum lawn on Sunday, June 23, 2024, at 1:30 p.m.

Margaret Raffo’s passion for environmental studies has been evident throughout her high school career; this has led her to excel in her Advanced Placement (AP) courses and earn the distinction of AP Scholar. Her commitment to environmental stewardship extends beyond the classroom, as she has been recognized as an Envirothon champion and a recipient of the Leatherstocking Region Envirothon Elizabeth Stein Soil Science award for two consecutive years.  In addition to her academic accomplishments, Margaret has proven to be an extraordinary leader and a dedicated athlete. As a Girls Cross Country MVP, Center State Cross Country, and Track All Star, she has consistently demonstrated her athletic prowess and commitment to her team. Serving as captain of both teams, Margaret's leadership skills and sportsmanship have earned her the respect of her peers and coaches alike. Margaret's involvement in various organizations and activities showcase her well-rounded and diverse interests. As the president of the Leadership Through Training program, she has played an instrumental role in developing effective communication and leadership skills among her peers. Her dedication to mentoring and helping others is further demonstrated through her role as a College for Every Student Mentor and her position as the Student Council Treasurer. Margaret's passion for the arts is reflected in her involvement with the CCS Musical Association, where she serves as the association's president. Additionally, her musical talents are exemplified by her role as the concertmaster of the Little Delaware Youth Ensemble, playing the violin with both grace and skill. Her participation in the Battle of the Books competition highlights her love for reading and her eagerness to engage in intellectual challenges. Margaret will attend Dartmouth College in the fall; she is pursuing a degree in Plant Science.

Punya Phaugat’s academic achievements speak for themselves. Graduating in the top four of her class and as a recent inductee in the National Honor Society, she has demonstrated a consistent commitment to excellence. Punya is graduating in three years and will take a gap year before pursuing a degree in medicine. In addition to her academic prowess, Punya is a well-rounded individual who has made significant contributions to our school community. As a member of the Varsity swim team, she has displayed exceptional athletic talent and teamwork. Punya’s leadership skills are evident as she serves as treasurer of her class, secretary of the CCS Library Club, and is an active mentor in the College for Every Student mentoring organization. Punya is not only an accomplished student, but she is also a compassionate and driven individual. She has acquired over 60 hours of volunteer service at Bassett Hospital, and she has been recognized as a Student of the Month for her strong work ethic and commitment to her studies. Her distinction as an AP Scholar and receipt of the prestigious Averill Award further attest to her unwavering pursuit of academic excellence. One of Punya's most commendable qualities is her dedication to social and environmental causes. As an advocate and participant in the Sunrise Movement, she has demonstrated her commitment to creating a more just and sustainable world. This passion for positive change is a testament to her character and her desire to leave a lasting impact on her community and beyond.

Cate Bohler has consistently ranked in the top four of her class, a testament to her unwavering commitment to academic excellence. While she remains undecided on her major at Cornell University this fall, her diverse interests and exceptional work ethic will undoubtedly lead her to excel in any field she ultimately chooses to pursue. Throughout her high school career, Cate has demonstrated an innate ability to balance her academics with an impressive array of extracurricular activities. As an enthusiastic participant in the Rotary Exchange, she displayed her adaptability and eagerness to broaden her worldview and engage with different cultures. She doubled up in many courses to be able to pursue her desire to study abroad and still graduate on time. Her commitment to our school's musicals, and her involvement with the Orpheus Theater, showcases her creative spirit. Her role as Senior Class President highlights her strong leadership abilities and dedication to her peers. Cate is not only an exceptional student and leader, but also an accomplished athlete. As a participant on the Varsity Cross Country team, the Track and Field team, and the Otsego Area Rowing (OAR) program, Cate has displayed unwavering determination and a strong work ethic. She has been able to translate these attributes into her other pursuits, including her involvement in the Yearbook, Literary Magazine, Battle of the Books, and Envirothon. Cate's dedication to these activities is a testament to her ability to manage her time effectively, a skill that will undoubtedly serve her well in college and beyond.

Onyx Loewenguth is an academic powerhouse, ranking in the top four of their class. However, it is not the impressive rank alone that sets Onyx apart, but their intellectual curiosity and willingness to engage with their peers and teachers in inquisitive discussions. As the Honor Society President, Onyx has fostered a strong sense of camaraderie and intellectual growth among their peers, inspiring others to strive for excellence. Onyx's passion for service and leadership extends beyond the classroom. They have been actively involved in various extracurricular activities, such as serving as the Leo Club President and participating in Envirothon – a demonstrated commitment to environmental conservation. Furthermore, Onyx has been dedicated to promoting inclusivity and diversity by being an active member of the Identity Alliance, a group that encourages open dialogue and understanding among students of different backgrounds. As a future Vassar College student, Onyx's eclectic interests and participation in numerous clubs, such as Literary Magazine, Library Club, and Yearbook, reflect their holistic approach to education. Their involvement in these clubs demonstrate their love for the written word and their ability to collaborate and contribute to a creative environment. They have made a significant impact on the lives of younger students by mentoring them through the CFES program, guiding them towards academic success and personal growth. Additionally, Onyx has taken on the responsibility of being a student director for the Catskill Area School Study Council Leadership program, further showcasing their leadership skills and commitment to bettering their community.
