On March 26, 2025, students from Cooperstown, Roxbury, Windham-Ashland-Jewett, Fort Plain, Gloversville, and Canajoharie competed in the Battle of the Books held at the New York State Museum in Albany. This annual competition focuses on students identifying the correct title and author of a book based on a quote from one of the books. Teams consist of four members, and the middle school students read a total of 16 titles while the high school students read 12 titles.
This year, attendees heard author Steve Sheinkin speak about his research and writing process. He shared details about two of his titles, Fallout and Impossible Escape, which were on this year's reading lists. Students also heard New York State Librarian Lauren Moore share a message about libraries and reading.
Congratulations go to Annika Murray, Caitlin O’Sullivan, Rowan Swatling, and Yimdrulk Gyamtso for winning the house cup for the high school division. For the middle school battle, the Cooperstown team of Alita McDonald, Zola Palmer, Nikka De La Cuesta, and Patricia De La Cuesta placed second with Gloversville taking home the middle school house cup.
The Battle of the Books began in 2004 with Cooperstown and Fort Plain having a competition between two middle school teams. The club advisor is Michelle Hitchcock.
