HIGH RISK WINTER SPORTS POSTPONED Please see below the message from the NY State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) regarding the delay of starting high risk sports (volleyball/basketball/wrestling) until no sooner than 1/4/2021. NYSPHSAA Postpones Start Date for High Risk Winter Sports Low and moderate risk sports on schedule to begin November 30th November 17, 2020 (Latham, NY) – The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) has announced the start date for high risk winter sports (basketball, competitive cheer, ice hockey and wrestling) will be moved to January 4, 2021. Until authorization is granted by state officials, NYSPHSAA member schools are not permitted to participate in sports determined to be high risk by the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH). Low and moderate risk winter sports will be permitted to begin on November 30th as previously determined by NYSPHSAA. “The NYSPHSAA membership has expressed concerns pertaining to the increase in infection rates,” said Dr. Robert Zayas, NYSPHSAA Executive Director. “Minimizing risk and exposure to COVID-19 is a top priority of the Association. We continue to make these types of decisions based upon readily available information and communication with state officials.” Low and moderate risk winter sport practices (bowling, gymnastics, indoor track & field, skiing, and swimming & diving) are still on schedule to begin on November 30th for those schools and sections who have determined it feasible to host interscholastic athletics at that time. Regular season games/contests can begin for low and moderate risk winter sports once student-athletes have participated in the required number of practices as per NYSPHSAA bylaws. “NYSPHSAA’s leadership recognizes the numerous challenges interscholastic programs are experiencing and the obstacles associated with resuming high risk sports,” said Julie Bergman, NYSPHSAA President. “While it is certainly the goal of the Association to provide all students with the ability to participate in interscholastic athletics we must remain steadfast in our decisions to ensure the safety of our athletes is our focus.” At this time, all winter NYSPHSAA State Championship events remain as scheduled.

As Covid-19 cases continue to rise in Otsego County and around the country, CCS reminds our school community to mask up, respect social distancing, wash your hands frequently, and understand the most recent NYS Travel Advisories in place from Governor Cuomo. Recommendations from our CCS Nurse Lucas Spencer: We have all been so conscientious about our masks and maintaining safe distances that we cannot forget that all roads begin and end with exceptional hand hygiene. Please encourage your CCS students and family members to sanitize their hands whenever needed . . . and maybe a little extra than just “needed”. It is a good idea to have all CCS students and staff sanitize on their way in AND out of classrooms. And if hands are soiled or after eating, hand washing is a necessity. Hand sanitizer is not recommended when hands are soiled; in that case, thorough hand washing is the best and safest practice. Please be advised that Governor Cuomo has issued new travel guidelines that require all New Yorkers, as well as those visiting from out-of-state, to take personal responsibility for compliance in the best interest of public health and safety. For complete information on NY State Covid-19 Travel advisory, please go to the following link: https://bit.ly/NYSTravelAdvisory.

CCS Seniors enrolled in Politics In Government (PIG) classes with Glen Noto, Josie Rusk and Jennifer Pindar wrote letters to our local military men and women who will not be home for the holidays. Diane Adams, VFW Women’s Auxiliary, contacted CCS and asked if students would be interested in writing letters. CCS Students jumped on board immediately! This was a great experience for our students and for our local military men and women who are serving our country. Kira (Bryant) Ochs is a CCS Graduate, Class of 2013.

CCS Licensed Teaching Assistant, Alex Siracusa, is working as a student teacher this year as she completes her Masters Degree in Education. Last week Ms. Siracusa worked with Mrs. Coleman’s 2nd grade students as they talked about democracy, the voting process, Election Day and the importance of exercising your right to vote. After learning about the process, students participated in a mock election to choose a class mascot among children's author Mo Willems book characters, Piggie and Gerald. When the votes were counted, Piggie narrowly beat out Gerald for the win with CCS 2nd Grade students.
