As Covid-19 cases continue to rise in Otsego County and around the country, CCS reminds our school community to mask up, respect social distancing, wash your hands frequently, and understand the most recent NYS Travel Advisories in place from Governor Cuomo. Recommendations from our CCS Nurse Lucas Spencer: We have all been so conscientious about our masks and maintaining safe distances that we cannot forget that all roads begin and end with exceptional hand hygiene. Please encourage your CCS students and family members to sanitize their hands whenever needed . . . and maybe a little extra than just “needed”. It is a good idea to have all CCS students and staff sanitize on their way in AND out of classrooms. And if hands are soiled or after eating, hand washing is a necessity. Hand sanitizer is not recommended when hands are soiled; in that case, thorough hand washing is the best and safest practice. Please be advised that Governor Cuomo has issued new travel guidelines that require all New Yorkers, as well as those visiting from out-of-state, to take personal responsibility for compliance in the best interest of public health and safety. For complete information on NY State Covid-19 Travel advisory, please go to the following link: https://bit.ly/NYSTravelAdvisory.

CCS Seniors enrolled in Politics In Government (PIG) classes with Glen Noto, Josie Rusk and Jennifer Pindar wrote letters to our local military men and women who will not be home for the holidays. Diane Adams, VFW Women’s Auxiliary, contacted CCS and asked if students would be interested in writing letters. CCS Students jumped on board immediately! This was a great experience for our students and for our local military men and women who are serving our country. Kira (Bryant) Ochs is a CCS Graduate, Class of 2013.

CCS Licensed Teaching Assistant, Alex Siracusa, is working as a student teacher this year as she completes her Masters Degree in Education. Last week Ms. Siracusa worked with Mrs. Coleman’s 2nd grade students as they talked about democracy, the voting process, Election Day and the importance of exercising your right to vote. After learning about the process, students participated in a mock election to choose a class mascot among children's author Mo Willems book characters, Piggie and Gerald. When the votes were counted, Piggie narrowly beat out Gerald for the win with CCS 2nd Grade students.

CCS Students in Mrs. Sciallo’s AP Literature class had an opportunity to visit the “Same Their Name” Memorial outside of Doubleday Field in Cooperstown. Ms. Jennifer Dibble met students there to give some background about the installation, the process of bringing it to Cooperstown, and share some of the stories connected with the memorial.. Students in AP Lit are studying The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and recently learned about Emmett Till’s murder in 1955 in Money, Mississippi. Till’s photo appears on the memorial wall. The installation will remain in place until December 1st. For questions, please contact rburk-sciallo@cooperstowncs.org.

Remote Choice Deadline
To all parents and guardians: Our neighbors in Milford sent out the following notification today. As a parent myself, I thought that you would want to have the same information and to be sure to speak to your children about how to handle strangers coming to your home, especially during this Halloween season. A special “Shout out of Thanks!” goes to the Milford School District for sharing this important information with all of us. Romona N. Wenck, Interim Superintendent The Milford Central School was notified by a parent today of a suspicious man visiting their home last evening. After consultation with the State Police, I am notifying all parents in the district to be vigilant and to remind their children to never open the door to any stranger. In this specific incident the person was a white male, 5’6” – 5’8”, heavyset, with a beard. He was driving a tan Dodge Caravan and knocked on the door asking if the parents were home. He also stated that he had a package to leave and asked the child to open the door. The State Police are investigating the matter. If you or your family have any similar experiences, please call the State Police at 432-3211.

CCS 6th Grade students in Diana Garcia’s English classes have been immersed in an interdisciplinary investigation of historic cemeteries. The Guiding Question of the study is "How do historic cemeteries reflect changes in people's values and beliefs over time?" Students built background knowledge by reading and discussing non- fiction text and viewing photographs, analyzed the meaning of symbols commonly found on headstones, and learned about rhyme scheme, free verse and the use of figurative language. Students completed fieldwork at the historic Christ Church Cemetery on River Street in Cooperstown.
